Project Overview
In Sam Wilson’s first outing as Captain America, Outpost VFX joined a host of global VFX vendors to help bring the famous suit and shield back to cinemas for the first time since Avengers: Endgame. For Outpost VFX Supervisor Sheen Yap and Head of VFX Richard Clegg, Captain America: Brave New World represented an exciting opportunity to contribute to an exciting new chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“We were really grateful to Production VFX Supervisor Alessandro Ongaro for putting trust in our team,” he says. “The work presented some interesting challenges, and we were really excited to contribute to Cap’s new chapter with Sam Wilson taking up the reins in this movie.”
Outpost VFX’s most complex work was rooted in the CG enhancement of Captain America throughout a tense battle sequence. His wings were fully CG in these scenes, requiring the Outpost team to animate them and integrate them into plate photography. Captain America’s vibranium attack, released as an explosive purple charge, required FX simulation and clever compositing work, along with rigid-body destruction that tears across the environment.
Other highlights included a full-CG ‘divebomb’ shot as Captain America descends from the skies, digital face replacement work, digi double integration and digital takeovers of Cap’s iconic shield, with the animation team tasked with sending it careening around the environment.
