5 Minutes With... 2D Supervisor Luddnel Magne

14 September 2022

Luddnel tells us how a supportive team and collaborative environment help him bring his most creative self to the studio in this 5 Minutes With...

What would you say are the values of the artists on team?

Everyone loves the craft and have a genuine passion for the work we produce. There is so much creative power collectively here, and everyone listens to and respects all other artists’ ideas with an open and collaborative mind.

When a team is motivated and enjoying the work they are creating, it’s hard to match that level of creativity and excitement.

Would you describe Outpost as a supportive environment? If so, how?

Definitely, yes. Each department supports the others, for example production is really great at understanding the artist team’s capacity and they always ensure the team is capable of delivering what they are promising without overstretching us.

Another way that Outpost supports its artists is by making sure we’re doing the minimum amount of overtime possible by understanding our workload.

How would you describe the Outpost culture in just three words?

Professional – Social – Aspiring

How do you ensure you bring your most creative self to work each day?

I find that having the time in my personal life to watch movies, work on my photography and feed my creativity allows me to be more creative in the studio.

The team works collaboratively a lot, too. We have brainstorming sessions where everyone can propose their own creative vision to a specific brief. After all, it’s teamwork, not just the supervisor’s work.

Everyone at Outpost has a really strong background and so watching people who have the freedom to express themselves creatively inspires the rest of us to do the same.

What makes a team great & why?

A great team starts with strong and fluid communication between departments. I think once you have that, plus a motivated team that commits to continually learning, a healthy studio environment and a great production team, you have a really strong team.

It makes everyone responsible for their part of the pipeline and inspires people to give the best of themselves.

What in your day-to-day brings you joy?

Working with a team that is super motivated and happy to help each other. It gives me joy to feel like I’ve accomplished one thing that I set out to achieve as a supervisor: bring artists together in a driven and cohesive team.

What helps you focus and maintain your flow while you’re working on projects such as Slumberland?

Having people on your team that understand your needs and enable you to totally focus on your duties is so important when you’re working on big projects. I had the best comp coordinator ever when we were working on Slumberland, she was such a great help to me and the comp floor; she was like my second brain and it helped me to become a better version of myself.

What lessons have you learnt from your team?

I learnt that having a really good production team can make complex show go so much smoother.

What’s been your proudest moment at Outpost so far?

My proudest moment was a client call where they asked all of the artists on the show to join so that they could personally congratulate and thank the whole team for all their hard work and the quality of the work we'd done for them.

It was an ambitious and challenging project, so to see the team’s effort and creativity acknowledged in that way made me really proud.

How does Outpost differ to places you’ve been before?

The work / life balance is in Outpost’s DNA. It brings a lot of benefits, and I can clearly see happier people who have a life outside of the studio; they can enjoy their hobbies, spend time with family and friends, boost their creativity etc. It creates a fresh and motivated team every day.

What’s your favourite memory during your time here?

My favourite memory was last year’s Christmas party where I met everyone in real life for the first time. I also got an awesome gift that day from a colleague to my newborn that was related to Slumberland and my baby’s name. It was really personal and thoughtful gift, very memorable!
